Demo Site Focus

Teacher Observation and Professional Development

  • Conduct yearly observation and coaching in fall and spring using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) for preschool teachers.
  • Track growth in effective teacher child interactions using data.
  • Provide teacher training and coaching centered on the instructional support domain of CLASS, which assists teachers in the areas of concept development, quality of feedback, and language modeling.
  • Strengthen the alignment of standards, curriculum, and assessments for preschool through third grade teachers and staff.
  • Promote teacher coaching as a support system for staff, including strength-based coaching, remote coaching, and coaching within the context of instruction.

DOE Partnership

  • Work closely with DOE to provide a sustainable, comprehensive early learning and development model.
  • Promote a continuum of seamless early learning experiences and services from preschool into the DOE system.

Principal’s Symposium

  • Plan and organize an annual Farrington Complex Principals and Preschool Directors Symposium. The purpose of the Symposium is to build awareness and understanding about effective leadership that supports early learning initiatives, with the goal of all 3rd grade students reading on grade-level. The Symposium is an opportunity to build a P-3 community of practice for the Farrington Complex to implement strategies that support this goal.

Student Assessments

  • Utilize the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) as a common assessment for the preschool and kindergarten classrooms. Baseline data collected is used longitudinally for children entering into elementary school from ECE programs and following them as they progress to first grade.
  • Train preschool and kindergarten teachers on understanding and interpreting the data, how to use it to inform teaching, and how to administer the test.

Supplementary Curriculum

  • Train teachers on the use of Imagine Learning, a software designed to help English language learners. An average of 34% of Farrington Complex elementary level students are English language learners. To support language acquisition in the ECE classrooms, software is provided for students.

Promoting Parent Education and Family Engagement

  • Offter trainings for teachers, principals and directors on the importance of family engagement.
  • Provide mini-grants for schools that support parent education and family engagement activities at their sites.
  • Facilitate seamless preschool to kindergarten transitions for children by building HIDOE and early learning program relationships, tracking transition data and promoting transition activities to elementary school principals.
